Venting a hip roof with exposed rafters

Hi all,

I am currently in the process of purchasing my first house. It has a hip roof and exposed rafters. The home inspector told me that the attic could use more ventilation. It already has a couple of exhaust vents but there are no intake vents.

From my reading, it seems that with the lack of a proper soffit, my only option would be to cut holes between the rafters. Some people drill holes and then staple some screening, but I was wondering if rectangular soffit/undereave vents (such as these ones: )could be used for a cleaner look. They would be installed vertically instead of horizontally. Is this a problem? Do I have to install them on all 4 sides? If I could avoid installing some on the street side I think it would be even cleaner.

What type of wind baffle would you recommend to prevent the insulation from blocking the vent?

The slotted method is far more sufficient than drilled holes.

I would make absolute certain there's no structural issues before you do either.
In the case in which you have to go through lumber that plays a direct role in supporting the tails/ends of those exposed rafters you would need to drill holes instead of cutting slots.
