Vent cap size ok for dryer?

When I first bought my house there was no vent for the dryer. There was a vent cap in the ceiling that I am now using for my dryer. It seems to work fine but I've noticed on some houses there is a larger vent cap on the roof (presumably for the dryer). Mine looks something like this....

Is there anything dangerous or intrinsically wrong with using a smaller vent cap for the dryer?

PS it throws a little lint onto my roof but this is something I can deal with. The vent piping is semi-rigid and there is only about 8' from the dryer to the vent.

I'm pretty sure I installed that exact cap for my dryer last summer. I ran a new outlet straight up and out the roof (~10). (The original piping was over 20 long and severely clogged.) Seems to be working fine, I'm pleased. Can't comment on how well it works with long-term use though.

4" is required. That Broan 636 has a bird screen inside which will stop the lint and build-up, interfering with the self-closing door. http://www.broan.com/ImageLibrary/br...s/99041930.pdf

"The vent piping is semi-rigid and there is only about 8' from the dryer to the vent." ---- so it is a slope ceiling above?

The new transition ducting is heavy foil covered- 8' maximum: http://www.appliance411.com/faq/dryer-vent-length.shtml

Be safe, Gary

I believe there's a sticker on the flashing that says to remove the screen if used as a dryer vent. It can be done with a flat head screwdriver.

 Thanks guys -- next time I am on the roof, I will check mine to be sure I removed the screen when I installed it!
