valley framing / shingles

Customer recently had a new sheathing and shingles installed over main roof and then decided to add an addition with intersecting gable to main roof. Is it necessary to remove existing shingles between valleys of addition ? The new addition has a vaulted ceiling w/ collar ties. About 17 '' of air space between top of ridge and bottom of collar ties, and will use vented soffit and ridge vent. Thanks
