Upside Down Roof, Leak?
Hello.
I have an upside down roof, well two. One on an addition to the house, and one on the garage. The one is plywood/some water seal/plywood. The other on the house is 2x8, some water seal, and insulation. I'm looking for recommendations to repair it. Some say just poor tar on it, some say torch down. Any and all suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Upside Down Roof, Leak?
OK.....what's an upside down roof?
You mean flat? If so asphalt shingles won't work.
Whatever it is, "slap some tar on it" is the wrong answer.
Enlighten me. Upside down roof??

It's flat. It's called an upside down roof becuause the insulation is on the top outter portion. Beneath that is the water seal( tar paper, tar, idk I haven't torn it apart) Beneath that are the 2''x8''s or x6 or 10 I estimated. I was told they call it an upside down roof because of just that, the insulation on top. Thanks for the quick reply.

Well on a flat roof I'd say a torch-down is the way to go, but if you do that you're going to burn the insulation that's on top? Is that right...it's outside on TOP of the roof?
Better wait on one of the specialists for this one, 'cause you lost me at "insulation on the top".....for me roofing is a "I CAN do it..but if there's something else to do, show me the way", kinda thing.

They are a big PITA. You have to start where the leak is showing up, and start removing insulation and the weight from there, until you find the leak, repair it properly with compatible roofing membrane, and waituntoil it rains before replacing the insulation and balast. At least that is how I would proceed.

I have worked on these as well. you have to know what type of membrane it is, and flood or hose test it before covering it up again.

Any suggestions in finding out what type of membrane it is? I brought it to Home Depot and they didn't have a clue how to tell?

The only thing I do not like about that method is that you can easily miss the mark if you dont test the entire roof. Even if you do, you may not recreae the same conditions as a rainstorm.

Jamn, this is know as an IRMA roof,
Insulated Roof Membrane Assembly
Just about any type of roof membrane can be used under the insulation.
I'll say it again, This is not a DIY project. PLEASE contact a qualified FLAT roofing contractor . This is not a job for a shingle monkey who say's he can repair all kinds of roofing.
No offense to the shingle monkeys but I don't pretend to know steep roofing like I know low slope.
