tin roof insulation

I am gutting a colonial home built in 1870. It has a tin roof that is in very good shape and I would like to retain it while insulating the attic into a living space. The roof consists of rafters covered with 1by boards that run across the rafters and then the tin is right on top of that. The house is preinsulation so there is no venting in either the gables or the roof peak or the eaves for that matter. Rafters are 4x4 (measured). Tin currently sweats. I would like to use 1 1/2" closed cell foil backed sheet insulation between the rafters to a 3" depth keeping a 1" air gap. I will follow this with a 2x4 sistering and a layer of R13 for a total of R27. Will this work and do I need to vent the eaves or not (heard both ways) and if I vent the eaves do I have to vent the peak with a fan or are the eave vents enough? Please help! I have heard no vents, just eave vents, and eave vents with a fan up top to keep a constant air flow. Thanks

You need 1 1/2" space under the decking. Sounds like the attic ceiling will be cathedral style. I doubt a fan will work.
Here are oics of metal roof ridge vent details

Vent the soffits and the ridge. The sweating is an indication of moisture in the house reaching the roof deck.

This is one that I would look for a spray foam installer, and have them shoot the closed cell foam. To gain depth for the insulation, you could "sister" the rafters with 2X's.

Thanks for the replies. I have purchased the insulation so I may have to chase down the ridge vent. With the foil faced insulation I will be using should the foil face in or out. I am doubling this up so should I face the foil out on both sides? Does it matter? Would it be at all possible that the foil would block the moisture from reaching the roof once it is installed? So many questions....and just beginning.

yes the foil is a vapor barrier,a vapor barrier always should face the home interior, you shouldn`t have to double it up

"I have purchased the insulation so I may have to chase down the ridge vent."
Don't buy any. It will need to be fabricated on the site.
In this pic, you see the drip edge going on. http://www.rooferscoffeeshop.com/ima...ntitled-26.jpg Then the ridge metal is folded and locked onto it, allowing at least 1/4" play all around.
