is there any danger if the hot water heater pipe leading out of the roof has become disconnected?
 
the pipe from the hot water heater that travels through the room is diconnected. is this a problem?

what pipe? From the description of something going through the roof, I would have to guess you mean the flue pipe.

If that is the case, then yes, it is very serious, like in DEADLY, if it has come disjointed. You need to have that repaired, immediately or turn off all gas to the water heater. You don't want the heater running at all, including the pilot light if there is one.

Dangerous gases are circulating inside instead of being vented outdoors. A local plumbing company should be able to help if you are not able to reconnect yourself.

I was wondering the same thing when it popped up from this last guys post. I was hoping I would have gotten a response that first night. When you read things like this, it really does cause concern. I had a family down the road that nearly died from a very similar situation. Luckily they were found before anybody died.
