steam out of chimney

When fixing my roof today (another today post) I noticed considerable steam coming out of an unused chimney in our house.

We bought this house last summer, and have never used this fireplace. (In fact, we were told it is unusable, an addition has a working fireplace that we use).

The steaming unused chimney has no cap. Leaves have fallen into it - piling up in the flu.

I am guessing that wet leaves are getting some heat from the house, and steaming into the sub-zero outside air. Fair assessment?

I would find out why...... Perhaps a gas vent from the HWT or furnace?

Be safe, Gary

17,000 dryer fires a year, when did you last clean the inside of the dryer near motor or the exhaust ducting?

Probably a vent from the furnace, possibly indicating a faulty furnace. Do not ask me how I know this, you may or may not want to know.
