We bought a house that has a new roof on it, but we had to have eavestroughing put on the house. the man doing it said we have no starter strip on the roofing and the new roof won't last 10 years because of it. the new shingles are 35 years shingles. is this true?

No starter/soldier course on the eaves will develop leak issues, eventually,
none on the gables won't/shouldn't be a problem unless they didn't install a proper overhang.

A couple pics would be helpful, it's not to often you see shingles ran with out starters on the eaves, I have only seen it done twice in the 30 years in the business.

the gables does have shingles put upside down along the edge. The length of the roof has an ice shield put down, but no starter strip on top of the ice shield before the shingles. There is an over hang of about 1-2 ins on all the roof.

are the shingles 3-tab or architectural shingles? if the shingles are 3-tab, the probability of water infiltration would be much greater then if it is an architectural shingle.

Next, how steep is your roof? If the roof is very steep (8-or-9/12 pitch) you would be far less likely to have infiltration issues.

The presence of ice/water shield is a big help- ice and water is very effective at the eave perimeter.

I run into a true case of no Starter Course of shingles on at least 1-2 homes per year, even including the older method of utilizing flipped upside down 3-tabs for that purpose.

If in fact there is a course of upside down 3-tabs used as a starter course, then the new roof only has to be spaced properly during it's initial alignment, so as to not align vertically, gap from the butt ends of the new shingles on top of the butt end gaps of the upside down 3-tab shingles.

If the gutter installer is not himself a professional roofer I would definitely get another opinion from a reputable roofing company in your area. Also, this something that can be repaired.
