Staples with comp. shingles?

Can staples be used on composition shingles? I have a staple gun, and really don't want to buy a coil nailer if the one I have will work. This will be inspected so it has to be per code. Thanks.

Some areas do not like staples. We used to use staples on every roof, including ones that have been through tornado winds and never lost a shingle. Fastener placement is much more important than what you use. You could just call the building inspector or ask when you get the permit.

I personally wouldn't staple my own roof. No pro's use one that I know of. I assume you are talking about a wide crown staple, that was a fad in the 80's. I haven't read the back of a bundle of shingles in a while. Maybe it would say something there. As for the inspector, if you must just give him a call and ask....

I know Certainteed, says in online instructions "Do not use staples". On the bags it says "use 4 nails per shingle". The bag used to say "use 4 fasteners per shingle".

not allowed around here. I think most brands will void the warranty if its staples. we wont staple felt either.

staples are only for office paper work.

Ever hear of a hammer? I would use a rock to pound roofing nails before I would use staples.

PS I'll bet you have the wrong kind of staple gun anyway.

Hey Lucy, under my name it says "Newbie". That means I don't know jack, and that's why I'm asking. Funny thing is, it says Newbie under your name also. So why don't you take that rock and shove it up your ass. Yes, I do have a hammer, and maybe I'll use it to help cram that rock farther up your ass. Have a nice day ************head!!!

mmmmmmm looks like things getting personal. The term newbie, is not that you dont know what your talking about etc it means your new to the site and until you have a certain number of posts you will be called this.

As for staples like one or two have said, nailing is the preferred way.:D

Never use staples...they simply make for really easy tear offs, if you get my drift.

I dont think Lucy's post was meant maliciously. I would use a rock if I didnt have a hammer, but you can rent a coil nailer.
