I have a very old house, luckily we found siding with a profile to match our original siding. Unfortunately it is about 1/8 inch shorter than the original. My question is, is there anything wrong with spacing out the siding so it matches up with the rest of the house? There will still be overlap but the siding will not be resting directly on top the piece below it. Thanks for the expertise!
When my house was resided, they took off the gutters, refaced with 2x6 lumber and flashed it. The J Channels were deeper than normal. You may have to order the deeper channels, if you cannot find them at the big box.
It also helps for you to update your location in your profile. Every area has different rules on insulation or air sealing on the outside, if your house is no insulated.
I had a local company do mine. They used Al-Side's Prodigy line, which has the insulation on the back, and when done, it is a mono wall siding.
Trying to upload profile of the siding ... I should also mention that it's going directly over another siding which someone told us it would be ok to do
do you need to match the new with the old rows? I don't like it, but if I had a compelling reason I might do it. Probably run a bead of caulk on every seam to fill the void
Yodaman, their problem is that that old wood Clapboard still has to breathe. Depending on the age of the home. They could have the old type of Celotex that has Asbestos in it, like mine does.
For the OP, you have what would be called "Dutch Lap" profile.
Is there a vapor barrier under the T1-11? If not I would cover it with house wrap or felt paper would be even better. As long as the new siding is pine or cedar, there should be no problems with the original siding breathing. Don't cover rotted wood remove it.
Yodaman if they can pull the Window Trim or look between the old siding and the studs. Should be able to see. My guess is that they will find good ole Celotex.
Thanks for the advice guys, I think we are on the right track. I'm pretty sure the old siding came off and the t1-11 is the only siding there currently. We will put the new cedar over the t1-11 with the spacing needed to match the rest of the house. Unless we find more 100 year old siding in good condition to match exactly, I think this is our only option.
There's several different names for that kind of siding: pattern 105, german siding, dutch lap...etc. I have the exact same siding on my 1923 house. I found a local lumberyard that has ordered some replacement stuff for me that matches perfectly. Maybe try calling around to different yards/suppliers to see if you can find a profile that matches exactly? Bring a scrap piece with you if possible.
