Something keeps trying to get through my roof!

This is our 18 year old roof. About 6 months ago i went to the backyard and there was a small hole in the roof and the insulation was everywhere in the back yard. We got it patched up and now whatever it was tried again in the same spot. We talked to a roofer and he said he has never seen anything like that before... do you guys have ANY idea what could be going on or how to stop it? Thanks

Big termites? Squirrel? In a case like this I would grab a case of beer, a pellet gun, and relax quietly in the back yard and wait.

You may want to check with some local pest control guys. They could probably tell you what's local to the area that would/could do something like that.

I would say your roof has more problems than just that monster hole. You need some repair work done for sure,if not a re-roof.There are splits all over the place.

That is common for a racoon to do to cedar shakes when trying to make a new nest and home for the new babies soon to come.

Remember, if you have to contact your home owners insurance company about this, Squirels are considered a Rodent or Vermin, which is not covered typicaly, but Racoons are considered Mammals and not Vermin, although the more common thinking about the two creatures may seem to be the opposite, this is how insurance companies treat their findings and base the conclusions on whether or not it is an insurable loss.

I currently am experiencing the determination of a very soon to without this current realm of reality squirrel. Sometimes we home dwellers forget that chipmunks and squirrels are wild and extremely determined to have their way. Check any bird feeder if in doubt. My wife discourages me from continueing to feed them but I like the cardinals. You best take a serious look at whether the roof needs a re-do (ie: re-roof) seeing how a very determined 4-6 pound critter can punch a hole that big. Let us know what you come out with and if squirrel still tastes like chicken. LOL I remember it to be a little too stringy to enjoy.

racoon-roof needs replacing-next time use a cedar breather underlayment over the plywood, before you install the cedar

Could check for an active / inactive hive in that area... The coon may be going for honey.
