soffit vents

So as some of you may know i am getting my roof replaced. in terms of ventilation we are thinking about going with box vents on the steeper slope side. but are these soffit vents adequate?

Those are more than likely covering up an original soffit material. It all depends on what it looks like underneath that aluminum that counts.

crap so i gotta tear them off and see

OldNBroken 08-26-2010 04:18 PM

no, start by just removing an easy one to see what's under it (technically, above it but don't start with me). Could be open, could be solid wood or plywood. If it's open it looks like you are adequate. If there is an original soffit under it you need to make sure there are adequate openings in it at or close to the perforated soffits you have there. Good news is you can just hole-saw them if you have to. A fine-mesh screening stapled over the holes wouldn't hurt to keep all the really tiny critters out. Then just re-install the aluminum.

edit: and, of course, make sure someone didn't blow insulation into the soffits. If so, you just got yourself another fun project to add to the list.

thanks for the tip. i am actually getting estimates on putting in new insulation as well. fiberglass is better than cellouse right

I'm a roofer and metal guy, not an interior insulation guy, sorry. I'm not sure what forum one would post that question in here.

Fiberglass bad - cellulose good.

why is that

Fiberglass is only bad if you live where it is cold....... or hot........ or mixed. Seeyou's ball....

Your soffit vents are the slots, similar to the holes, maybe a tad better. If the holes, and 18" deep soffit you get 7sq.in.NFVA per ft. of perforated. So you are getting= 7NFVA/3' = 2.34 sq. in. per ft. You should have 9NFVA per ft. That would be with ALL vented, no solids.

thanks Gary. the link refers to ridge vents though. i dont thnk i can install a RV with my flat roof. it would have to be box vents.

edit-instead of using insulation what if i got like the aerogel stuff and put a sheet of it to cover the entire attic space

seeyou 08-26-2010 09:39 PM

Cellulose is more effective at stopping infiltration. With the same R values, a building insulated with cellulose will out perform a fiberglass batt insulated building due to less air movement. Chopped fiberglass is better than batt for ceilings.

federer 08-26-2010 10:12 PM

oh sorry i meant blown in fiberglass not batts

Gary in WA 08-26-2010 10:17 PM

Wow, that is something! First time I ever heard of it! Not familiar with it. How much does it cost? Sold locally?

I wonder why they did not vent every bay in a flat roof.......

Gary
