Anyone here install or have a SIP metal roof on their home?
I was wondering what feedback, good or bad, these roofs have. |

SIP metal roof or metal roof over SIPs?
Never seen the former personally.

I've also never heard of something dubbed a "SIP Metal Roof".
They do manufacturer SIP panels that are skinned with sheet metal as opposed to plywood. It's popular in Florida for additional strength against hurricanes. But even those panels are not rated to be a finished roof surface. You'd still need to apply a finish over them. I have, however, installed metal roofing over SIP panels before. They aren't really treated any different than a traditional roof surface when applying the roofing finish of choice. It's been almost 10 years now since the first one I was apart of and I've heard nothing from the client. That system included a variety of standing seam metal, asphalt shingle, and EPDM. As for my opinion. I love the idea. Continuous insulation that leaves the structure free an available for renovation, maintenance, inspection, etc.

They make a metal SIP that has the foam insulation and a standing seam metal roof already installed, an all-in-one application:
http://www.kingspanpanels.us/product...m/default.aspx It give one an R-48 on the roof and alleviates the need to stick frame a roof and insulate the roof, in one step. |

Learned about something new, thanks. After an initial blush review and providing it complies with all your local codes (haven't verified myself), I can't see why this product would be a bad idea...

I can't see how it would be a good one or in any way usable for anything but a straight gable roof. How would a valley work in it? I like SIPS and I like metal roofs, but this product is trying to do too much. |

One thing I've learned is there is no "miracle product". Some things work excellent in one application and crappy in another.

While I would agree that SIPs and other advanced construction techniques are well founded, time savers, and might ultimately prove to be much better than traditional stick built...this option would not be my favorite.
What do you do if the metal becomes damaged, leaks, requires replacement, etc? Maybe I am being a bit old school but I would prefer to have my sheathing and then put down my roof.

these are insulated metal roof panels not sips, and are not new to the commercial market, why would the valley detail be different than non insulated panels?other than cutting back the foam and building up the valley to the metal height

SIPs Metal Roofs
They are a SIP...they are Structural, they are Insulated, and they are a Panel. Though I do agree that they do not fit the "typical" idea that coincides with the term "SIP".
WOW and all make good points, but I feel these panels are more for pre-fabricated metal building type systems than for stick frame homes. If you only want to have your support structure be purlins on main girders then this type of roof system seams attractive. They certainly are better for insulating than the traditional batt rolls around the purlins.
