siding or flashing?
Could anyone explain whether the piece hanging on the front side of the house is a piece of siding or flashing? My friend told me it is flashing but I can't tell.
It is about 10 ft long and covers the wood from the elements. My friend provided me with a roll of flashing and said I need some kind of table to bend it. Could anyone tell me what tools I need for the job? Thanks! Tacitus |

Nether, it's just called wraping.
You would need one of these to bend it. http://www.tapcotools.com/contractor...=1109&gid=1107 For just one piece it's not worth renting one, they cost about $1600.00 to buy. Any contractor or siding company can make one up for you in about 5 min. Your also going to need some alumium of stainless steel white trim nails to attach it. That piece should have been nailed from below not on the face. |

What you have there is called cladding in my neck of the woods, and you need a brake to bend it.
Flashing is related to the roofing system. This is not. Just call a siding guy. Make sure the sheen matches.

That would be called "Fascia Wrap" in the Show Me State.Anyone with a 10'6 brake, coil stock and about 10 minutes can handle the task.It would take me longer to pull my VanMark out and set up than to do the job.
Also depending on the color and grain it might be so simple you can do it. Just go to Home Depot or Lowes or a siding distributor and buy a piece of pre bent fascia wrap.Just make sure you take a sample of the missing piece so you can match it as far as the grain pattern goes. Also you can paint the new piece to match if need be.This is something (If your able) to do yourself.I would charge you about $175 depending on color. You could do it yourself for a substantial amount less.Your not going to pay a siding installer for project complexity your basically paying for a service charge.

Trouble with preformed is any I've seen has two raised areas in the middle of it to help stop it from buckeling so it would match what's up there.

Nope, right on the face of it.
You can do the same thing with your brake buddy if you have the right dies on a Tapco brake. The preformed facias also have a hook on the bottom where it bends right at the tip of it. |

I think Joe is talking about the two longitudinal beads they put in the HD stuff to prevent oil canning because the stuff is like .015" Aluminum. Cheap as shat. I just had My fascia cladding replaced with .032" Matte White. Of course that ain't coil schlock.

I did get a quote from someone who told me it would be $175 but he won't guarantee the color would match. For matching color he asked for $400!!! |

His reasoning may be because he would have to replace all of it to get it to match.
Any two companys that make coil stock may or may not have the same idea on what white means. I've seen some that were an off white and looked like poop next to a real white. |

There is more time and effort expended in this post than the effort to replace that cladding all the way across the front. measure up what you need. The face should extend up under the J on the back about 1/2 inch, come down, brake 90, go back about 7/8" (Assuming 1 x Face) and it should turn up an inch if possible behind face. Slot the 1 inch 2 ft on center and fasten from the back with No. 8-1/2 inch long white head HWH screws. Any commercial roofer will make this up for you. You will want to brake and return the corners 6 inches minimum so you will need red and green snips.
OR, Just hire a Commercial roofing and sheet metal company to do it for you, OR, Hire a roofing and siding guy with coil schlock to replace it, face nailing and all. JUST GIT-ER-DONE!
