We're about to replace our roof with an experienced roofing contractor that almost exclusively uses GAF shingles. However, we're interested in the look of a Tamko product (Heritage Natural Timber shingle).
QUESTION: Should we worry if an experienced roofing contractor has had limited experience with the shingle we've selected, or is it likely an experienced GAF roofing contractor can work equally well with Tamko shingles?
If they can read, I'm certain they can install them correctly. I'd be more worried about their ability to flash the roof correctly.
Just because he recommends GAF probably means he prefers them over other manufactures that is all. As far as installation goes, all laminates go on the same way.
If you say he is an experienced roofing contractor then you will get the same quality from him regardless of what manufacturer he uses.
The question you may have already determined, is he truly experienced and did you check out the recent and long time ago past roofing jobs and contact any previous customers.
A shingle pretty much is a shingle, with very few and minor differences between one manufacturer and another.
I agree with Ed.
Claiming themselves as a roofer of any single manufacturers materials is a red flag as far as I'm concerned.
Look at some of thier previous work, not just this or last years, but from 2, 5 and 10 years ago.
Call your local roofing supplier (phone book), and ask about the roofer.
Thiers a lot of good contractors who make the mistake of restricting thier sales by only offering certain brands, but to leave you with the impression that they may not beable to handle any other brands is not good.
Thanks to all of you. This was a big help.
What experience level does this roofing contractor have and even more importantly, how about the crew that will be doing the job?
Many companies are just "Paper Contractors", where they only sell the job and then go out and find the lowest prices immigrant subcontractor they can "Farm Out" the job to.
Have you had the opportunity to see his crew working in progress on a job simlar to yours in your local area?
Has he shown you photos of how he will deal with particular nuances in regards to your specific style of home?
I know that certain styles, such as Cape Cod homes, require significant additional attention paid to both, The Fresh Air Intake Ventilation and The Proper Type Of Ridge Vent Exhaust Ventilation.
For instance, a Cobra Roll Vent for a Ridge Vent or the other brand called Roll Vent do not work well on a steeply pitched home.
How many years has the Contractor been in business nder the Same Name? Not, "How Many Years Experience He Brags About". That is a very misleading and lying way of authenticating ones true length of time in the business, but way too many contractors use this technique. They add up all of the total years of any employee they ever had and provide that grand total as the justification number.
It is very easy to verify, as to how long they have been in business.
Just look up when they got their roofing license on the States website.
For Illinois, that is https://www.idfpr.com/DPR/licenselookup/default.asp
I guarantee that if their License Number is more than 4 digits following the 104- category, that they are very New to being in business.
Did you get a copy of their Workmans Compensation Insurance and General Liability Insurance policies Certificates?
There are so many things to look at to make sure you have chosen wisely. A recent poster on this forum and another forum, now are regretting their coices that they held in moderate esteem upon their first selection of them, but many Red Flags were raised once the jobs were getting close to starting and then taking much more time than expected and with much debris strewn about the property, with little regard for the home owners property.
