I'm beginning the process of planning for a new deck with a screened-in cover. Because of the way the house is built, I think the best roof will be a shed roof. However, the best pitch I could expect would be a rise of 3-5 inches over 12 feet. Is that too low for shingles? If so, will I be able to use metal instead?
That's a "flat" roof (below 2/12), and way too low for shingles as the primary weather barrier:

We never shingled anything below 4/12. Either used 90# rolled roofing, modified bitumen, or rubber. For the last two, make sure you have someone that is used to working with the materials.
