shingle question

Hi,

When you get close to the ridge of the roof how far should you shingle up to it before you add your ridge cap shingles?

This is for a small play house so no ridge vent. How would I then shingle to the ridge?

Run both sides to the top, cut one flush to it and have the other side overlap. Make sure you run them high enough to have the caps cover part of the exposure.

until no salvage shows below the ridgecap. Just keep cutting the salvage off flush to the ridge. Should only be one or two courses. Don't worry about nailing through the shingle where the ridgecap will cover it.

Why not ridge vent, play house or not it's going to help the shingle last far longer and keep the inside far cooler for almost no money and little extra work.

Salvage is the part of the shingle that does NOT show once the next run of shingles is placed above it.

I wouldn't overthink this trying to figure out venting unless you really want to.

How much of the sheathing on each side of the ridge board do you leave open?

I think its 2 inches down from ridge. Stopping 6 inches before gable. You need to do both sides of ridge. I would double check with someone like jagan here.
