Shingle Prices


I had a contract with my roofer to get my roof done in the Chicagoland area, but due to their rain delays and life events for me, we will be pushing it until next year. The contractor has provided me two options:
- Refund my deposit and rebid the contract next year
- Keep the deposit and do the work at the currently contracted price next year

My question:
Do shingle prices fluctuate both up and down with oil prices? Or do they only go up? Given the current downward trend of oil, I'm thinking this may translate to lower shingle prices next year (not to mention, I know there was a shortage this year due to all the storms).

I know no one can tell me for sure where the prices will go and understand rebidding the project could cause a significant price increase if oil goes back up...looking for a trend though...

The correct answer to that has make or lost millions for commodity traders.

Also factor in the possible changes in insurance--overhead--inflation--

Get out the crystal ball!!

Shingle Prices


Economy, Oil and Nature are a few reasons for spikes in the pricing, but there are several other reasons for why the price will never spike back down.

If you trust the contractor and have in writing that the price will be the same in March as it is now, I would stick with him/her.

With the costs of employment (insurance, comp, wages, etc.) only increasing, if you can, keep locked in at today's rate. That way, when his bid increases by 15% next year you are still good. Agree with Sly, make sure to have it very clearly spelled out. Also gotta agree with tcleve, the price of shingles are not going to go down, much like gasoline.....

The last several years we've regularly seen the notices
Due to *the latest excuse* there will be a 15% increase on xx/xx/xxxx

Everything from price of oil to more efficient refining leaving less asphalt at the bottom of that barrel, and anything else they can use as an excuse.

We are all still waiting for the day when we get the letter saying "Great news, we are lowering our shingle prices by 15%"

My supplier just dropped my preferred manufacturers cost per square by $6. That is going to save me around $1200 by the end of the year.

Right now we are booking for spring. All signed contracts get a 10% discount and prices promise to be held. After a contract is signed, I order the materials, they pull it and store it in the back of the warehouse until I need it.

Rather or not a customer profits from a contractors cost is a horse of a different color.

My contractors purchase price is just that, my savings.

I went ahead and locked in at the current price. When you mentioned all the other prices that could change I realized it's not worth it. When the contractor finally asked me the color I needed and said he was going to order the shingles now, my decision was confirmed. Thanks for all your feedback.
