Shingle material cost 2009 vs 2011

Can anyone estimate the cost difference (shingles only, say, per square) of GAF Timberlines in summer 2009 versus now?

I just checked a 2 y/o invoice. Landmarks were about $70/sq then. I paid $93/sq last week. So, it looks like about 25%. I'd have guessed 40%, too. Go back another year and that would be about right.

Where are you buying Landmarks for $93 a square? They are going for way more than that up here.

Thanks for the responses. The reason i ask is that I got a quote from a roofer who did my neighbors house in 2009. Same contractor, same materials, same roofing plan, very comparable houses.

50% higher price this year though. ($11,500 vs. $7,700) Ouch.

Well, maybe... What percent of a roofing job is material? 50%? Then we should be looking at a 25% increase in total job. I know wages around here aren't going up!

Insurance, fuel costs, electricity for the shop, maintenance for vehicles, tires, have all gone up here. I would assume his costs have risen too. Mine did, much more than a simple 25%.

That is why you need to shop around and get as many quotes as you can and then decide from there.

I'd also make sure they were insured in the end.

OK, let me admit to typing before thinking.

I've gotten 3 quotes; $11,500, $13,500 and $17,500. The highest one is the shadiest company; I wouldn't hire them if they were at $10,500.

However, the guy at $13,500 is the one who did the house across the street for $7,700.

So, reality is a 75% increase in two years. Go figure.

We did a roof earlier this year that came in right around 10k. The neighbor asked for a quote 5 months later. I was $2300 higher.

On the CertainTeed Landmark talk, I have now gotten a price break due to how much we have been purchasing for about 85 a square.

This reminds me of when I first started doing this 16 years ago. We were doing plenty of new houses then and some were high pitches and 40+ square. I thought....just wait till these homeowners need a new roof. I bet it will be $25K or more.

Wait till demand for quality work comes back and wages increase. These houses will cost double that for a new roof.

Maybe he lost his butt at $7700 and is figuring out what he really needs to charge to run a profitable business.
