Sealing the roof from the attic
My roof is leaking about a foot from where it meets chimney. I went in the attic and saw that they put 1x2(or something similar) horizontally on the rafters and then put the sheetings on them. I now know exactly where it's leaking from but my fear is that perhaps the water is coming from way top of the roof, getting under the shingles but the underlayer paper is good till around chimney and that's where it enters the attic. I will use rubber coating over the shingles.
With that being said, is there any preferable product that I can use to close the thin gap between 1x2s from the attic? I could spray-foam but I'm not really trying to stop the air draft. Anybody has suggestions?

Spray foam and rubber will not fix your leak. 
More than likely you have an issue with the chimney flashing and it’s just entering the attic a foot away. But since nobody here can see what you’re seeing then posting a picture of the roof and chimney would help.

I'll try to take a pic tomorrow and post it. If it is the flashing, I can't put a layer of rubber coating starting from the bottom foot of the chimney to about 3' away, kind of like a wide rubber skirt around chimney?

Two choises, fix it right or have it keep leaking and take out the roof sheathing, sheetrock and insulation below.
The is no way a roof leak of any kind can be fixed inside an attic.
By the sounds of your questions you need a roofer to take a look at this not you.

If you want to “solve” the problem then post some pictures. How to attach a photo to a post
At this point all I can guarantee you is that there will be no rubber involved is repairing your shingle leak.

Ok. Here is the pic. As you see, the flashing is covered with the rubber stuff. I did it I believe a month ago. But I think it needs to cover a lot more, rather than just the bottom of the chimney. (I thought at least)

What you need is a knowledgeable roofer to build a cricket behind the chimney and rework the flashing.

I see. Thanks for the advise. So you think the water is building behind the chimney, then running to the corner and going in the attic that way? I see how a cricket would prevent the water build-up behind the chimney but it seems like it'd direct the water where it enters the attic again.

What you need is 1.New Roof,2.Cricket,3.Some new counter flashing..,.,Pretty much in that order.

What a mess, that roof should have been replaced 5 years ago. and the chimmney should have been tuck pointed, not smear tar all over it. Good luck trying to get it off now so it can be fixed correctly.

That roof is shot and only a new roof will fix your issues. And quit spreading that stuff on it. It'll only increase the cost of a new roof.

The TV says it fixes any leak problems!

Thank you all for your inputs. I am aware that we need a roof. However, I was just looking for a temp solution. My daughter will be out of daycare in a year and then we'll be able to get a new roof. I'm also glad that I found out about "cricket". We'll need 3 of those. It's a civil war house with 32 sq. Roof and the lowest price I got was $7,500 "if I take out the shingles and replace the necessary sheeting". Btw, I did use 2 cans of that flex-seal. :D I'll go ahead and use a little more tar since it probably won't get any worse and I know exactly where it's leaking. But we'll get the new roof next year and it'llbe a huge relief. Thank you all again.
