Depends.
Is your roof a steeper slope?
Do you have an open field or body of water near by?
Do leave in an area known for high winds?

Yes, six is better if you answered yes to any of the above.

Sly is right on.

Making sure those extra nails are in the proper nail location is important too.

Yes it is better to use six nails. Also, some manufacturer's offer higher wind warranties if you 6-nail the shingles.

roofing how many nails?

Hello All...I'm a newbie here and in the middle of a roofing project and need some assistance. I just built a 30'x15' patio cover where I came off of the house rafters by attaching 2x6's to them with 1/2" lag bolts. I put 1/2" CDX for the roof and just finished the tar paper. Being in Oregon, of course it rained on the new tar paper (felt) but I've read that is not a big deal as long as I wait until it's dry to put the shingles on. The issue I'm faced with is nailing the shingles to the roof. I really don't want the roofing nails to come through the 1/2" CDX and be visible. The slope is roughly 2:12.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Add a second layer of plywood. The nails need to penetrate deeper into the plywood than 3/8" Or you can install vinyl soffit panels underneath to hide the rafters and the nails.

There are 17 rafters that the plywood is nailed to. Would it suffice to use those as "nail points" instead of going through the plywood? That would probably be out of code wouldn't it?

Thanks!

That will definitely not work with shingle nailing. Why the big deal about not seeing the nails? Your gonna see the bottom of the plywood and all the rough 2x6 rafters anyway.

We've primed and painted the plywood and rafters to lighten up things a bit. Hmmm...looks like I'm going to have to look at vinyl soffet panels. Uggh...

That's an option I suppose but I already have the roofing felt down. I would have to rip that off, nail plywood to the existing CDX, and re-felt. OR...put some plywood in for a "ceiling" I suppose?? I've been so careful with every step of this project...but this one has just taken a bite out of my rear!!

Maybe you should just roof it and see how much you really notice the nails. Probably not as much as you think.

May as well build to minimum Code; http://publicecodes.citation.com/ico...005_par007.htm

Double coverage on the felt for your low slope; http://publicecodes.citation.com/ico...005_par009.htm

Did you add some support under each new rafter with framing over the house exterior wall? Your house rafters may not take the added load….

Permits are nice for a paper trail in case of insurance claim and when selling.
