Roof Ventilation - Gable Vents?

I purchased a fourplex rental property last summer. The seller agreed to install a new roof. I've been informed by several individuals that my roof contans no ventilation. The city inspector, who is a great guy, suggested installing some gable vents to increase the life of the roof.

Would it be prudent of me to install these gable vents?

#1 go back and add your location to your profile. Just go to quick links to edit.
Why not a ridge vent so the whole roof gets vented not just the ends?
Is there any soffit vents? If not adding any vents is not going to do much good.

Roof Ventilation - Gable Vents?

Thanks for the quick reply Joe! I updated my location on my profile, thanks for the suggestion. There are no soffit vents in the roof. I believe ridge vents were mentioned as well and will go with what's best.

Soffit vents are under the roofing not on the roof.
Got a picture so we can see what you have to work with?
Without soffit vents there's no make up air for the roof vents and it will cause a negitive pressure in the attic which will suck out the conditioned air in side the house.
Picture sucking on a straw with your finger over the end of it.
