Question

this roof vent go on top of which layer ?

hi, i was wondering if the pictured roof vent should go on top of

A) asphalt felt
B) shingle at the very end

also, was wondering if the sloped part should be facing down hill (common sense says yes but checking).

thanks

In your 1st photo, the left side (slanted) is the top. The right side (open) is the bottom.

The bottom goes over a shingle and then the next courses go over the vent.

Go under the vent until a shingle passes 1/2 or more of the hole in the roof, ideally. I like the first shingle on top to have it's upper edge ABOVE the top corner of the hood. Not always possible.
In this case, the owner made it above the corner, then caulked it diverting the water underneath. Not good. NO CAULK! Leave 1/2"-3/4" channel for water flow.
If the first shingle on top does not make it to the top corner, Taper it's upper, hidden section towards the upper lip so the lip and the taper come to the same spot. Cutting the shingle square will leave an edge to catch water and guide the water under the shingles. Not good.
