roof replaced after only 5 years
we had elk shingles put on our roof about 5 years ago and now we are having ice problems. We were told the person who installed them should of taken off the old shingles before putting on the new ones. And installed them right on the wood roof. But we need to get the same color as the elk ones, are the gaf the same colors or different

Define ice problems?
It is allowable to install two layers of shingles in most areas.
Complete tear-off is more expensive, but preffered.
Is your roof vented properly? That can cause some "ice problems"

if it was not a complete tear off, you know for sure that no ice and water shield was added. how old is the house, and do you know the condition of the material under the old layer of shingles (felt, etc...)

Did you have ice problems before the new roof was put on?

I&W shield doe's not stop/prevent ice damns, it only helps to keep the damage caused by them minimal.

The causes of ice damns is ventilation , insulation and/or structural design.

To answer your question, yes, the Gaf/Elk shingles are close enough in color to the original Elk to use them in a repair situation with out creating an eyesore.

I agree with SlyFox.

If you have a properly ventilated house you shouldn't have to worry about ice dams. In a perfect world, all your snow melts off your roof at the same time.

Your next snow go look at your roof. If snow is melting from the top of your roof first and you still have snow/ice at the eaves, more than likely you have an improperly ventilated roof or some kind of insulation problem. The unmelted snow/ice at your eaves is an ice dam and is creating a 'dam' that is holding water from the melting snow above.

As far as GAF & Elk colors, GAF didn't carry over all the colors when they purchased Elk (I know Mission Brown wasn't carried looked like an Oreo on your roof), so get samples from your local shingle supplier and match the shingle samples up to your current roof.
