Roof leak only in winter

I have a section about 10-15' where a new structure connects to an existing structure where I get ice build up which ends up with a leak. Can some type of ice sheild be installed over the existing asphalt shingles which are in good condition?

Nope, going to have to post a picture if you want some better suggestions.

Most often ice damms area caused from poor insulation and poor venting.
So that will need to be addressed as well.
The valley flashing is done under the shingles not on top of it.

The only good way would be to remove the current shingles in the area and inspect the wood decking below. If ice/snow builds up in this area, even a proper roof job might not correct incorrect pitch or construction of the new/old areas. Ice and water barrier should be used in ALL valleys as well as the bottom 3 feet of the roof.

Keep in mind ice/water barrier doesn't prevent ice dams, but helps them from causing damage to the roof and ceiling below.

Certainteed Winterguard is the only Ice and Water that is warranted from any ice dam leaks.
