Roof Leak - Asphalt Tiles Don't Overlap Correctly

Asphalt tiles don't overlap correctly. It's as if two roofers worked around opposite ends of the roof and met up here to finish the job. The gap runs vertically from gutter to rooftop flashing. After a few years the caulking they probably applied simply is starting to perish. What is the best way to correct this problem?

Thanks, AaronB. You are absolutely right about getting what you pay for. I inherited the problem when I bought my home and I am just trying to learn the best DIY solution.

Is the roof OK otherwise?
Any idea how old it is.....any signs of curling other problems?
Any plans to redo the roof?
Do you know if there is 1 layer or 2 layers of shingles on the roof?
I assume the leak is along this caulk/joint line?

Temp fix I'd go get some roof "caulk" & caulk it

You could also slip pieces of step flashing under the 'seam' from the bottom up,of course, and tack in place if shingles will lift up without tearing them.

Sometimes,if the roof isn't too old, a good roofer could cut in the proper stepping with matching shingles.

There is no fixing this properly without redoing the entire side.

I am going to agree with Aron B, you need to re roof the structure properly. Any other attempt to repair will be a short term temporary solution at best. The cost to re roof the structure with asphalt shingles is very nominal especially when compared with the costs to repair water damage within the structure and to eliminate any mold issues that may arise from it.
