Roof with Fringe?

how you guys doing? we're looking into getting this nice fixer upper but were curious about the roof shingle trim. can someone explain this? it looks like a twisted shingle nailed to the wood. was it decorative at some point or functional? any help is appreciated.
if all goes well with the purchase, i'll probably become a regular on here. thanks again.

Ed the Roofer

It looks like whoever roofed that section, never trimmed off the portions of the shingles that overhang the edge when they were starting and ending their shingle runs.

That looks very sloppy, but should be able to be trimmed off. The roof itself should be inspected for appropriate deterioration and ventilation though.

Either never trimmed, OR, they were rolled over the edge for a 'deep and rounded' look. Not uncommon. Done in white, it looked like snow piled on the roof. Some in light tans almost look like thatch.
