It depends where the 2 roofs join.Is it at a ridgeline or is it actually the same roof that you share?If it was a ridge,a cap would be a must IMO.If it was the same roof I wouldn't do a cap,but rather a tie-in.I'll wait for pics..Did I make sense?

sounds like a townhouse with shingle roofs going from front or rear to a peak at the center(ridge/shared with neighbors)that would have capping,what the lady is more likely referring to is a sidelap going up the roof,It does sound acceptable in that situation
