rolled roofing alternatives?
We recently purchased an 1820 colonial in upstate ny with several different pitches to the roof. Two upper sections, almost flat, are covered with tar. Two sections with a low pitch are rolled roofing which is in pretty poor shape (I don't trust it through the winter). The highest, center section of pretty steep pitch is shingled and in fairly good condition. I figure we can get a few more years out of it.
What I want to do is replace the rolled sections and do something with the flats. One of the flat sections is above a low pitch area, with a smaller po-rtion of steeper pitch between the two. This steeper pitched area, also rolled roofed, is very deteriorated. If I IWS the low pitch and apply new rolled, then seal the flat above with liquid rubberized, what can I do with this section? It seems a little silly to shingle this small area between the tar and rolled. If I IWS it as well, is there anything I could cover it with that would hold up to the water flow better than rolled?
Also, I was told by one contractor that he would just cover the existing rolled with IWS and redo it with new rolled. I was a little sceptiocal. Is this a legit idea?
