ridge vent termination at roof apex?

Can someone explain to my why the ridge vent terminates at least 12 inches from the apex of the roof? Just replaced our roof and it seems noticable, especially on the gables, that the ridge vent does not extend to the end point of the roof. However, upon inspection of other homes of which have received new roofs in Charlotte, NC, including high end new homes, this practice of terminating the ridge vent 12 plus inches from the apex is common. I think it looks ugly, but is this the standard?
