Ridge vent on cape cod home

I am about to replace our roof shingles. We currently have three power vents and 8 louver vents. We do not have soffits and the attic is finished.

All of the contractors are suggesting replacing the power exhaust fans and the louver vents with a ridge vent across the top of the roof.

I have read that ridge vents do not work well without soffits or eaves.
We leave in Kentucky.

What do you recommend?

Regardless of venting, exhaust vents require a balanced intake.

Where is the intake air coming from?

I presume through the metal air vents? There are seven or so metal air vents. There are no other vents or sources of air.

I myself prefer ridge vents with soffit vents. By soffit vents I mean ventilation air enters at the eave/overhang and convention currents move it up and out the ridge vent. The soffit itself does not have to be vented, you can install eave vents like shown in this link.

just my thoughts, I'm sure you'll get more responses this evening.

The problem I have is the house is a Cape Cod with a finished second floor. There are no eaves or soffits.

could you post a few exterior photos?

I have the same issue and then some.

1. I am getting a new roof as Sandy has peeled back a few shingles, everyone says they are going to put in a ridge vent.
2. My upstairs is unlivable in the summer due to the heat from the roof. from what i can tell there are no real vents for the roof other the the small slits in the gable ends.
3. I have been thinking about spray foaming the underside of my roofdeck when i refinish the upstairs. I hear lets of pros and cons. looking for more advice.
