Hi all
I'm about to re-roof my house over the old roof which is intact, I installed the existing shingle roof about 30 years ago.
I have already examined the sheathing from the inside ,no staining or obvious rot.

My questions are, should I install a new drip edge over the old shingles, and do I run the starter course up the rakes as well as the eaves.

Thanks in advance
Ralph

I refuse to even add new shingles over old shingles. If there 30 years old that's about double what the old ones were expected to last so there's far more chance there's damage to the sheathing that may be on the top side.
By far the shingles I find that have blown off and need replacing are on shingled over roofs.

Yes you can do it but at some point it's going to cost someone double to rip them off at some point.
To ansewer your question there is no need to run shingles up the rake or do anything with the drip cap.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I lost a couple of tabs after Irene. the insurance adjuster inspected the roof and thought it was no more then 3 to 5 years old. It's really in good shape I just figured it's time.
If memory serves, they were Owens corning 25 year fiberglass shingle.

I'll be 66 in a few days, so it won't be me that has to strip this roof in the future.
