Remodeling Kitchen/Bath - Where to Begin???
We just moved into a home and want to redo the master bath and kitchen. We were thinking of starting with the bath as that will be a smaller job and less complicated to figure out. We've never done major remodeling before and aren't sure how to begin. Do we call a general contractor? Or go to a specific kitchen/bath remodeling store? Do we start with a designer? We have some ideas of what we want but would be interested in seeing if they are possible or if there is something else we haven't thought of and how much it will cost. Where do we start??? TIA

I would start by reading one or two books on the nuts-and-bolts how-to of remodeling a bath. That will give you a better sense of what are the boundaries of 'the possible', help you decide how much (if any) of the work you want to try doing yourself, and also leave you better qualified to have a conversation with a contractor if/when it gets to that point. You want to be able to ask intelligent questions and you need to know a few things about the process before you can do that.
This, plus making your layout/materials/design decisions (which probably will also require research, though more of the 'going to showrooms' and 'looking at pictures in magazines' and maybe 'talking to a designer' variety), are the first two things to do in my opinion.
