Ready for Re-Roofing - Pase 1

I am preparing to re-roof my barn, hoping to complete it before winter. I was on the roof earlier today and started to clean it enough to use that spray-rubber sealer to seal leaks until I can re-roof. But after sweeping the known bad areas, I started researching synthetic underpayment. (Thank God for iPhones with Internet access.).

Are the synthetics really good for up to 6 months by themselves? If so, I may tear off the old shingles and tar paper to replace the bad wood and install new synthetic paper while deciding to use shingle or steel roofing. Either way, it will be DIY. How much overlap do you need between the sheets?

The roof line is not particularly steep, but joins a more shallow patio covering. The transition point is where most of the leaks occur. What can I do to ensure it does not rot at the joint again?

Thanks very much for the assistance.

Michael

Just roof it right to traverse the transition. It may or may not need metal there. Having said that, metal would likely be best at the transition.

The pitch of the main roof is about 5.6:7. The patio covering is more like 1:3.

Thanks. I will use metal under the synthetic felt. The plan is to get that much done by the July 4.
