re-roofing an old roof over original plywood

I've heard that GAF shingles aren't reliable but that Owens Corning is the best. Is that true? What about Certainteed or other brands?

That same type of question is asked on about every diy, roofing and home improvement site on the internet.Probably 5 times per week.Check a few pages of threads for your answer.

Personally I prefer Certainteed.But that's just me.

since you are ripping off everything and starting anew, it might be a good time to inspect and possibly replace any rotted roofing deck or plywood.

just make sure that you understand and negotiate how much it would cost, should this be necessary.

i completely neglected this part, thinking my roofing deck was in good shape, so I ended up paying approx. $1,000 extra (materials alone would have cost $300).

good luck

gafelk is no good, not even good for a dog house, they removed granules from a very important part of the shingle to cut weight and cost

owens corning better but not the greatest, they now have spots in the tar which is a step in the right direction, the fabric strip on the durations is horrible, the quality over last years durations is a lot worse.

landmark by certainteed top notch, my choice
