re-roof questions

I am in the process of gathering information to get some bids for a re-roof. I have about 3500 sq ft on 2 roofs of a split level house, all 4/12 hip. I think I want to add ridge venting to replace the 2 non-functioning turbines. The house has continuos vinyl soffit vent with foam insulation baffles.

What items should I look for on the quotes to compare? I would like to use at least a 30 year archectectual shingle. How do the brands compare with each other?

How do most companies charge for wood replacement? I understand its hard to tell what may need replaced, but dont want to get overcharged either. It seems that someone could have a good price on the re-roof and then overcharge on wood replacement to make up there price. Thanks

re-roof questions

Personally I wouldn't select a roofer based upon the quotes. Some roofers will say and write anything to get the job and then do what they always do. Select your roofer based upon his reputation and references. If you make the mistake of picking your roofer based upon something like him charging less per replacement sheeting then you'll often end up paying more in the long run for repairs or shorter roof life. Now if you find two great roofers with great reps then pick between the two based upon their quotes.

What references should I expect? Past customers? Should they supply names that I would contact? There are numerous contractors that have been in the area 20+ years.

Yes, past customers. But it's even better if you can seek out people independently who have gotten reroofs and get their feedback on their roofer. Longevity may not necessarily mean good work but certainly isn't a negative.
