Raising roof pich

I live in central michigan in an approx. 2000 sq.ft. house that has a 3:12 roof pitch with asbestos shingles. The roof is approx. 12 yrs. old and needs to be replaced due to the damage done from ice backing up under the shingles. I am considering raising the roof pitch to either 4:12 or 5:12 and also going to metal roof sheeting. Can this be done without removing the existing roof? What would something like this cost? Thanks.

Asphalt shingles?

Sure you can do that. The cost would make it impractical though. I'd recommend going with a low-pitch roofing solution.

No need to raise the roof if you have a good quality metal standing seam system installed the 3/12 is not an issue.

BTW, if your roof is only 12 years old, they are not asbestos shingles. I'm assuming you meant asphalt.

I used ice & water shield all the way up my 3/12 roof
The roof was basically sealed before the shingles went on
Ice backing up on the shingles: do you have soffet vents installed & ridge venting? Is the ceiling under this properly insulated or is heat leaking & causing the ice to form?

Thanks for your input. Sorry about the mixup on the shingles, I'm sure your right about shingle type.
My wife spoke to our local lumber yard about our problem and was told they handle a line of roofing that sounds like what you're referring to. Apparently it has some type of sealing strip that joins the edges together for the entire length of the joint. If I can't cure the ice build up problem will ice find its way through these joints as well?

Thanks for your response.This was my wifes place when we married and there is no attic access (yet) so I'm unable to verify some of the conditions you've questioned. She's told me that an ice and water shield product was put on when they reroofed but only about 3 feet up. She has also said the attic was insulated with 12" fiberglass insulation. I had the wooden soffit replaced a few years ago with vented aluminum and there is a vented ridge cap that runs the entire length. I wonder how effective the ridge cap is though since it's always covered with deep snow. Recently I've been uncovering it with a leaf blower and have noticed that there is a crusty snow built up on it so I'm sure I'm getting some heat loss through the ceiling. Also I had gutters installed which have created another problem. The water from the melting snow freezes in the gutter and turns that into a block of ice which then backs up under the shingles (and the ice shield) and has peeled back the ice shield exposing the roof sheeting. Aything else I might check?

CALCIUM CHLORIDE,AND SNOW RAKES---YOU NEED TO ADD THE INSULATION,AND VENTING TO KEEP THE HEAT AWAY FROM THE BOTTOM of the roof,as far as soffit area venting,I drilled large 3" holes thru the existing fascia,added wood blocks over rafters for nailers,padded between with cobra vent,then installed new fascia over it,and capped it with aluminum

afterwards We cap the fascia,and aluminum cover with 3x3" backflashing that goes down below where the gutter will mount like this :

and then secure the gutter on top of the flashing,I also like to seal the back of the gutter to the 3x3 with Geocell tri-polymer sealant-I`m in Rockland county,deal with Ice dams all the time
