a question about a broken shingle
Hi everyone. Just bought my first home so I'm fairly new to the diy game.

Today we had some very high winds in my area, and I noticed that one tab on one of the roof shingles broke off. I have a handyman coming within the next two weeks to fix some other items found during the home inspection and he can fix the roof, but is this something I need to have fixed right away? Can one broken tab cause the roof to leak? With all we have going on right now, I really don't want to be replacing any drywall right now.

Not really, but I would not waite too long, the sooner the better. There is about 5" of shingle still above this but under the one above. Its kind of hard to explain. But for short term medium rain should be ok for a while. Driving, very thunderouse heavy rain, may leak.

If you are in a snow climate, then the continual melting slowly can travel down any exposed nails into the attic.

I wouldn't get too worried about it.

If there is a felt paper underlayment under the shingles, it will provide a temporary additional minimal resistance to fast leakage.

First, any drips that enter will follow the underside of the sheathing until it hits an obstruction in its path and then drop down n top of the insulation in the attic. If it is only a few drips, that won't severely hurt anything.

Get it fixed though, because it won't get any better on its own.

If one broke they might be getting brittle. Is so, you'll need a new roof soon.
