Poor venting caused brown stain?

Hi all, I took a hot shower last night and half way through the shower I noticed a small brown stain on my bathroom ceiling. Initially I thought I had a roof leak but it's bone dry outside and no pipes above. Could this be condensation finally catching up? The bathroom is very small ( with a mediocre venting fan) and gets steamy easily.
I'm thinking it's something with the paint reacting to the constant moisture?

Attached is the pic of the stain: it looks bigger in the pic but really about 2-3" diameter.

Thanks all!

Please note the house was very humid because we had 60 degrees yesterday , and the few days before we're freezing.

Hi bob, yes it vents outside. Just took a hot shower again and noticed that spot looked moist again.
My husband is away for a month so I'm trying to figure this myself.
Thank you!

When its cold outside and cold in the attic, chances are you'll have a cold exhaust duct for the fan too. If the fan isn't strong enough to exhaust the warm moist air outside before it condenses on the cold pipe, you can get what you have when the condensation comes back down the duct. The solution is to 1) make sure your fan has good pull, 2) you have insulated ducting for the fan exhaust, and 3) there are no dips or bellies in the exhaust pipe that can collect condensation.

Thanks quag. What gets me is why only on this one spot? Is it because it's right next to the shower and bathroom fan? That's where most of the heat moisture goes ( that spot)

Could be the design of the fan. Most fans have the exhaust port on the side of the fan housing.

If there's a bare spot in the insulation that spot would be colder and water would condenice there first.
Have you more the insulation back in that area to see if it wet on the top side of the drywall? If the insulations wet and the top side is wet then it's a leak from above.

Two likely causes---condensation in the vent fan tubing---leaking back and staining from on top--

Insulate the vent pipe after you replace the old leaky one--

Or--Missing insulation above the stained spot causing condensation right there---add insulation.

Hasn't rained in ages. Roof is bone dry. Haven't gotten to insulation because I haven't ripped ceiling open. Hoping to avoid that

I think it's weird that this issue occurred on a day we unusually got 60 degree weather after a week of really cold weather. Doesn't help my bathroom is very very small

I noticed the ceiling paint used is probably a standard white, wall paint. If I get a damp cloth and move my finger on it , paint comes right off.

Need to see/know about the attic conditions.
  1. insulation
  2. venting
  3. bath fan venting
  4. etc.
