outdoor shed entry for basement

Good morning I hope someone could help me. I have a basement with an unusual door size. I have a big gap at the bottom of the door and all cold wind is getting inside my basement. I though of making like a "shed entry" putting a new door outside so there is another door before this "weak" door. would it be safe to use wood to make this and what would you use to cover the wood and for the roof?
or should I just make a door?

can anyone please help
thanks!

making/replacing the door would be easiest, but adding a foyer/mud room is a good idea as well, and easily do-able with the right help.
I'll be doing the same thing soon. a 9'x5' foyer.

A picture of the area would help
All depends upon existing slope...roof etc
My neighbor has a little entry area with a door before his basement

yup, mine too, a dig-in for his back basement door, but it's just a roofover with planters on each side, AND he has to run a pump because it'll fill with rain/snow water otherwise, so like ScubaDude says, it depends.... and pics always help us a lot around here. Po)
