OSB over old felt???

I just hired someone to replace my cedar roof with shingles. The are tearing off the cedar, and putting OSB over the top of the old felt.

I never heard anything like this. Is this OK?

Should I be concerned about the lack of airflow under the OSB?

I think they are just trying to save trash charges.

OSB over old felt???

It won't hurt a thing......as long as they compensate with proper venting. The felt will have little to do with it though. The new wood, I&W, etc. will "tighten up" the air flow in the attic. Make sure the ventilation is addressed.

OSB over old felt???

but why do this?its your only opportunity to start clean, get rid of years of dust ,dirt and mold spores

i know siding installers that rip a house only to leave the old felt and whatever may be behind it intact, its the only time you can really look at the sheathing and not just assume that everything is ok,cause unless your superman you really don't know.ive unexpectedly found many a carpenter ant ..i vote rip it off

OSB over old felt???

Wow, they couldn't take the 15 minutes to get rid of the paper? Granted it won't harm anything, but it would make their job easier. Without the paper they could easily see the strapping and trusses which would make nailing the OSB easier.

Jondab, you could request (as the one who is paying a pile of money for a re-roof) that they completely clean the roof of old materials.

OSB over old felt???

thank you for your responses. They have done about half the roof now...I will ask that they remove the rest of the felt and I won't worry over the half that is already down.

Roofer commented about being green with less landfill. Not sure I agree with his logic.

Tell him the carbon footprint is better left at the dump than in your house, lol
