Question

old skylight leaking

this skylight roof housing leaks mildly when it rains really hard or there is a lot of snow melting.

any idea what i should do to waterproof it again? looks like hot tar seal around the glass panels. the housing body looks like sheetmetal covered in some bitumenous coating

thanks

Peel all the crap away until you get to the metal frame.
Just gently disa\emble the frames and note how they are made and shaped.
The end frames, bottom frames and top ridge frame are all you need to remake.
The glass slides up the two side channels and under the ridge metal.
The bottom frame has the drains and locking tabs to hold the glass in.
You can make this out of heavy aluminum, heavy galvanized or prepainted steel.
A thin piece of weather strip goes under the glass in the channels.
No caulk should be necessary, but it can be put in under the ridge, in the channel, and under the metal side caps, in the channels, at the edge of the glass. None at the bottom. No caulk will be visible.

BTW, any glass shop worth it's salt should be able to make the replacement parts necessary and do the reinstallation.

that thing has been patched so much that theres not much left of the glass area. the for sure way is to take it apart and rebuild it so you have something clean to seal to.
