No Roof Underlayment

In 1992 I subcontracted out the roofing of a wood framed building we constructed. The roofing contractor used 3 tab fiberglass shingles and no underlayment. I seem to recall that the manufacturers recommendations were not to use felt paper. Can anyone confirm that at that time (1992) the use of felt paper was not recommended?

No Roof Underlayment

Around Northern Illinois that was common. I don't know for sure, but I think it had something to do with the use of OSB roof sheathing.

No Roof Underlayment

I was working "mostly" in the state of Florida during that period and never hear any mention of it in that area.
I ran the shingle roof crew which also was the dry-in crew for the tile roof installers.

No Roof Underlayment

I have to agree with Sly,I have removed plenty of roofs from that era and majority had felt.Although I have reroof lots of steep that had no felt.Whats the pitch?I think even now felt isn't required but recommended on steep pitches.I use felt on everything from 3/12 to a 24/12,every pitch should have some type of an underlayment.IMO
