Question

No Gable Roof Access

Hello,
My question is, the main roof is a gable version running parallel to the street. Attached to this is another small gable section pointing toward the street with a gable vent attached to it's face. There is no access from the attic into this smaller area with the vent. Can I cut an opening through the main roof to this area between the rafters? I need to repair the gable vent, which is about 30 feet up, and I would prefer to do it from attic access. I would like to remove the vent via the attic, repair and paint on the ground and replace it via the attic. Leaving only the caulking to be done 30 ft in the air. Yea, I don't like landing from that height.
Any thoughts?

No Gable Roof Access

You can cut the decking from below to access the dormer but not a rafter without installing a header. Chances are the vent will have flanges nailed from outside, unless it is a wooden one. If it is a wooden vent is the trim nailed to the vent from outside? Chances are it is.

About a 0 % chance of being able to do this from the attic. The flange and trim are all on the outside.
