New shingles, roof slats are now broken...

While remodeling my house (home was a rental for past 3 years) I noticed that I was having leaks through the ceiling in multiple spots. My house was reroofed 5 years ago with 30 year shingles. Once in the attic, I discovered that A LOT of my roof slats (older home, don't have decking but not sure of the official term for these) are now broken in half.

Long story short, I called the insurance and he said that it was in no way storm related and was abuse so they won't pay. He did say that it is possible to repair them without removing the shingles and shoring the slats up from the attic side. Does anyone have any experience doing this? I have basically rebuilt this house but have never touched roofing of any kind. Any advice/suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you.

They're called "spaced-boards".
Post some pictures from the attic - showing the underside of the roof.

Here are 2 pics. One of the slats and one of an example of the broken slats. I need to know how these are repaired without removing shingles (done from the attic side).
