New roof shinles breaking and falling off

Hi, In September I had a new roof put over an existing 12 year old roof because I was getting solar panels.

End of Oct, Hurricaine Sandy hit and I lost a bunch of tiles. My neighbors' roofs lasted fine. Since then, I continue to loose tiles when its very windy.

Most of the tiles are broken in half and the bottom half is what comes down, but also larger pieces come down. One large. Piece looks like it only has one nail hole in it. The roof was installed through my solar contractor who has said that he will fix it.

I'm wondering what was wrong with the installation ( its only been about 4 months) and I am leary about the repairs. Should that entire side (its primarily one side because the other side of the roof is protected by the solar panels) be replaced?
I'm worried that if he just replaces the shingles, what if this keeps happening. I don't want to be chasing him down every month. My roof is high and I know enough horror stories that I won't go up to examine the shingles for a closer look so I was hoping someone could help me. I am attaching pictures. Thanks,

To answer questions: I mean shingles all the time, sorry if I said tiles. The original roof is 12 years old -I had my house dormered. The only reason I got this roof put on was because of the solar panels -they are guarenteed for 25 years and they don't recommend putting them on a roof older than 7-8 years. I never had problems with my old roof and those shingles are not coming off. Thanks.

Please post some pics of the tiles that came off. Sounds like they were not nailed correctly.

It was incorrectly installed. There is no repairing of it that will work.
Both layers need to come off and install a new roof correctly. A new roof will do you.

You say shingles in one area and tiles in another, which is it?
Big mistake to just go over the old roof, no way to see if there was any rotten wood under the old ones. If the old ones where that bad you can be pretty sure that there was some sheathing damage.
High wind areas use a differant nailing pattern.

Based on the 2nd pic, it looks like they were probably not nailed correctly.
The fact that it's a 2nd roof layer may also be a contributing factor (you can reroof, but it isn't as good as starting clean).
The fact the they were installed by your "solar contractor" may also be a contributing factor.

Installing asphalt shingles is actually pretty easy in most cases, which is why it's so crazy that so many people do it wrong. Someone needs to inspect that installation to see exactly what the problem is, but if you're continually losing shingles from different parts of the roof, it probably means you need to start over.

#1 your installing three tab shingles. There the cheapest shingles you can install and are far more likly to blow off then an arcutectual shingle.
An arcutectual will be all one one piece and twice as thick so there far harder to lift and blow off.
#I know you had no control of when you had to replace them but this time of year where you live is the worst time. They have no way to get hot enough to seal.
Even if they where nailed right it looks like the tabs are just blowing off.

Thank you, everybody, who took the time to answer my questions. My contractor is coming out next week to take a look, but now I know not to do anything until the weather warms up. Thanks again, Susan
