I was about to pull the trigger on some new site-formed aluminum gutters when my reliable neighbor told me that galvanized steel is the only way to go. He says his friend the building inspector told him this. Any opinions?

We're talking about less than 100 lf.

LOLOL Thats exactly what I was thinking Joe! Did he say that the galvanized was much better than Douglas Fir Wood Gutters? My Grandfather, (RIP) my Dad (94) and I used to replace wood gutters when I was young. Im 67

The only thing I would add is to use hidden hangers at no more than 24 inches on center to hang aluminum gutters, and install 4 hangers about 8 inches apart where you will rest your ladder to access the roof so the gutter does not bend when doing so. You also want to do this in a corner, and strap your ladder. I have peel and stick rubber on the back rails of my ladders where they contact the gutter to keep the ladders from slipping. Fiberglass ladders on aluminum gutters is even worse, if thats possible.

Gutter spikes were a very bad idea in the first place!
Far easier and far better looking to use hidden hangers.
I have not even seen anyone installing steel gutters or gutter spikes for at least 20 years.
I use a ladder stand off when there's gutters so the ladder does not even touch the gutters.

Yeah, Joe is right. The only thing the gutter spikes are good for is hanging pictures for your wife so she does not ask you to hang any more pictures. As far as the ladder standoffs, we are talking about normal humans here Joe, not a guy that own's at least two of every tool and accessory that was ever created. I keep waiting for you to be on American Pickers, so I can see your collection.

I've yet to see a house with gutter spikes where there not all pulled out away from the fascia after a few years.
I've never once seen hidden hanger pull out.
A simple job like trying to remove a gutter to paint or replace a fascia is a nightmare with spikes.
They act like a log splitter going through 1X pine leaving a crack for water to get in.

Must not have been properly placed.

I have more than a few times.

I agree with you on that but that statement kind of contradicts with your first one.

I'm sure it does. I've never seen 1X pine used for fascia until I moved to the middle. Don't have that problem with 2x WRC (a left coast thing).

:eek:HOLY CRAP............My post sounds like jeffnc...........Someone hit me with bug spray......and I mean FAST!
