need advice installing soffit vents in vinyl siding
Hi- yep, I'm new! I've searched but haven't quite found the answer for my specific situation, so it's time to post!
Little background on my house attic/roof in general- it's about 1000 square feet. The garage is attached. I have only 4 roof vents (think I need to add more in the spring), and 2 gable vents. One of them is basically the big entrance into the attic from the garage deck.
Because the insulation situation up there was terrible, and consumer's energy had a rebate program before the end of the year, I blew in fiberglass insulation to about R-50 or 60 just recently. I installed baffles every few rafters and marked on the outside where they were for future soffit vent installation (in hindsight maybe I should have done them all, but just too much work).
My soffits (eaves?) hang over only about 6-8" before the gutter, and are basically 1" wood covered by vinyl siding. My plan was to simply cut rectangular holes and cover them with the louvered vent covers you can buy from home depot. Well, I got to it with the sawzall, but then realized that installing those louvered vents will leave open gaps where the siding is grooved. I guess my concern is that bees will make nests in my attic in no time flat, and it would be a pain in the butt to fill every gap with caulk, not to mention look like crap. Any ideas? I don't know if I can replace the whole thing with a vented vinyl soffit, but even if I do I feel like it wouldn't be very much ventilation compared to the louvered vents.
