Question

My 5 year old composition roof started leaking

We own a 1955 home in Seattle WA with a 5 year old composition roof. It rains all the time....yeah Seattle right .. Two nights ago it snowed, then melted, then within hours then started raining and my new-ish roof started leaking. I can see moisture that made it in the attic in a couple places and more than a little water in one spot. I cleaned up the water from the big leak this morning before work. After work and a day of more rain not really any new water made it in.

Whats up?? Was the rain just at the perfect angle last night? Do I have an issue?

Any insight would be much appreciated!

The angle rains and the wind driven rains are some tricky little vickies to try to figure out. Some leaks can boggle the mind. Its possible that an ice dam formed and seperated some shingles then when it rained it allowed the rain a route to travel. Then by the time the ice melted with the rain the shingle closed any route the rain took.

Anytime roof leak is an issue, if it leaked once it's likely to do so again.

It also could be an issue in which it leaks all the time but only makes it in side the home during certain types of amounts or direction of winds.

Is the leak near/under a penetration like an exterior wall, vent, sky light, chimney, etc.
Pictures would help.

So I don't have a picture at the moment but I think I can describe it. There is nothing around this leak coming through the roof. No chimney, pipes, ext. The leak is on a seam of the plywood where two pieces meet over the 2x6 braces.

Hope this provides some visual.

Thanks

When nailing sometimes you hit an H-clip which leaves the nail unseated, so that portion of the shingle maybe lifted? Also since your house is constanly moving its possible that the underdriven nail and the position of the H-clip could have worn a hole in the shingle over 5 yrs.

So I should be looking for a raise or anomaly in that area of the roof? What would I do if I did find something inconsistent?

Thanks again!
