Metal roofs

I was planning to install a metal roof this year, but yesterday driving home, I saw two neighbors houses with metal roofs, with the gutters torn off of the house.

We had approx 100" of snow this season and over the weekend temps went into the 40's and rain causing ice/snow sliding from the roof catch the gutters and rip them off. What can be done to prevent this?

My roof is 4:12 any advice?

Thank you,
Mike

Thanks for the fast reply, Tom. Do you know of a good research source?
